What it is
Authorisation to drive, issued by IMT. A licence issued by another country is either recognised or must be exchanged, depending on the country of issue.
Who needs it
Drivers resident in Portugal. Holders of an EU or EEA licence must register their address with IMT; holders of a non-EU licence must exchange it.
Where to get it
IMT. Exchange applications are currently online only. The documents listed by IMT are the foreign licence, an identity document, proof of residence authorisation and a medical certificate.
Does it expire?
Yes. Portuguese licences renew on an age-based schedule, with a medical check at each renewal.
