Utility contract / bill

Contrato de Fornecimento (agua, luz, gas)

What it is

A water, electricity or gas supply contract and its bills. It carries no legal deadline of its own; its value is as evidence of address. A junta de freguesia may accept it among the 'outro meio legalmente admissivel' for proving residence when issuing an atestado de morada, under Decreto-Lei n.o 135/99 art. 34.o as applied to Lei n.o 75/2013. Banks, telecoms and other services accept it on the same basis.

Who needs it

Anyone evidencing an address, owners as well as tenants. It serves that purpose only where the account is in your own name; most entities require the document to show both your name and your address.

Where to get it

The supplier, when the supply is opened or transferred into your name. Municipal water is billed by the camara or its water utility.

Does it expire?

No formal expiry. In practice many organisations expect a bill issued within the last 3 to 6 months.
