The registration number in the Servico Nacional de Saude. It is used to register with a health centre, to access public hospitals as a resident and on prescriptions and referrals.
Who needs it
Residents who use the SNS public health system. Private cover is a separate arrangement; neither requires the other.
Where to get it
Your local centro de saude, with a residence document, NIF and proof of address. Free.
Does it expire?
No. The number appears on prescriptions and referrals.
