Tax number

What it is

The nine-digit taxpayer identification number issued by the Autoridade Tributaria e Aduaneira. It identifies the holder for tax purposes and is used across banking, property, utility and contract processes.

Who needs it

Required for most formal transactions in Portugal, including opening a bank account, filing tax returns and property purchases.

Where to get it

Any Financas office or Loja do Cidadao, or through a representative before arrival. The request is free. The documents required are a civil identification document and proof of address; a non-EU passport also requires the entry visa.

Does it expire?

No. The registered address (morada fiscal) should be kept current with the AT.
