What it is

A marriage certificate issued by the civil registry of the place of marriage, carrying a Hague Apostille where issued abroad, and commonly accompanied by a certified translation.

Who needs it

Requested where a family relationship must be evidenced, including family reunification, a joint residence application, inheritance and citizenship. Marital status for tax purposes is managed through the Portal das Financas and a certificate is not usually filed with a tax return.

Where to get it

The civil registry of the place of marriage, plus apostille. Where the marriage took place in Portugal, any civil registry office issues the certidao.

Does it expire?

The certificate itself does not expire. In practice processes commonly require a recently issued copy.
