Imposto Único de Circulação (IUC)
What it is
The annual circulation tax on a vehicle, collected by the Autoridade Tributaria e Aduaneira. No disc or sticker is issued.
Who needs it
Vehicle owners, annually.
Where to get it
The payment reference is issued by the Autoridade Tributaria e Aduaneira, not by a bank. On the Portal das Financas: search for IUC, open 'IUC - Entregar Ano Corrente', select the vehicle category and registration, then 'Emitir para pagamento' to generate the reference. It can also be requested in person at a Servico de Financas or an Espaco Cidadao. Payment is made with that reference at a Multibanco machine, through MB WAY or through home banking.
Does it expire?
Recurs annually. Through 2026 it falls due in the month of the vehicle's first registration. A transitional change has been announced for 2027; it is not treated as settled here.
