What it is
A certificate of criminal record. Two are commonly involved: one issued by the country of nationality or previous residence, apostilled, and the Portuguese certificate.
Who needs it
Requested in visa and citizenship applications, and for certain professions and volunteering roles.
Where to get it
The Portuguese certificate is issued online at registocriminal.justica.gov.pt for a fee. The foreign certificate is issued by the relevant national authority and apostilled.
Does it expire?
The Portuguese certificate is valid for 3 months.
