What it is
The identification number in the Portuguese social security system. It records contributions and is the reference against which entitlements are paid, including sick pay, parental leave, unemployment support and pensions.
Who needs it
Anyone working in Portugal, employed or self-employed. Employers require it in order to register an employee.
Where to get it
Online through Seguranca Social Direta, or at a social security office. Free.
